WNBA Expansion Draft results

The WNBA held its first expansion draft in 16 years today, as the Golden State Valkyries selected their roster for next year's inaugural season in the league.

The expansion brings the WNBA to 13 teams in 2025, with the number likely to rise to 15 for the 2026 season, with clubs in Toronto and Portland.

According to Sabreena Merchant and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, the Valkyries selected Las Vegas Aces guard Kate Martin and New York Liberty forward Kayla Thornton among 11 of 12 probable options. Golden State acquired nine more WNBA players, including Temi Fagbenle from the Indiana Fever, Veronica Burton from the Connecticut Sun, and Maria Conde from the Chicago Sky.

The full rundown of players selected by the Valkyries is as follows:

  • Iliana Rupert — Atlanta Dream
  • Maria Conde — Chicago Sky
  • Veronica Burton — Connecticut Sun
  • Carla Leite — Dallas Wings
  • Temi Fagbenle — Indiana Fever
  • Kate Martin — Las Vegas Aces
  • Steph Talbot — Los Angeles Sparks
  • Cecilia Zandalasini — Minnesota Lynx
  • Kayla Thornton — New York Liberty
  • Monique Billings — Phoenix Mercury
  • Julie Vanloo — Washington Mystics
Kate Martin, drafted by the Las Vegas Aces last year, now has a new opportunity with Golden State.

Martin was selected by the Valkyries in the 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft tonight after a brief time in Nevada. Martin, 24, was selected by the Aces in the second round of the WNBA Draft last April and will now take on her next challenge with the league's 13th franchise.

"I'm really excited," Martin told ESPN in a live interview following the expansion draft. "This league is all about opportunity and you just need one shot, right? I'm very thankful for the Aces and everything that I got to learn there, but I am really excited for this new beginning and to build something from the ground up with the Valkyries."
